Long Rod-Like Liquid Crystal Containing Azobenzene and the Applications in Phase-Transition Regulation and Orientation of Nematic Liquid Crystal

Phase-transition and orientation of liquid crystal (LC) are two crucial factors for LC application. In this work, a long rod-like compound containing double azobenzene (M1) is successfully designed synthesized. The combing technologies nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR, 13C NMR) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) used to identify the chemical structure molecule. Additionally, polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), one-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction (1D WAXD) experimental results show that M1 exhibits an ultrawide range phases stable even at ultrahigh temperature, which indicates can be applied in some especial devices. Further, tune temperature commercial 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl (5CB). A series samples 1–7 obtained through doping different contents M1, ranges dependent on composition ratio 5CB. More interestingly, all resultant spontaneous vertical hydrophilic glass substrate. Meanwhile, due effect reversible transition between homeotropic random molecules achieved when these cells alternately exposed UV irradiation visible light, implies material shows potential application display storage technologies.
